ABOUT US
We are a democratic, autonomous tenant union building power for all tenants in Flatbush. We support one another as we fight for collective control over where and how we live–standing against landlords and the ongoing forces of gentrification, harassment, and displacement that threaten our neighbors and our communities.
We endeavor to preserve the rich cultural tapestry of Flatbush, built largely by historically marginalized folks, many of whom are Black, Brown, Caribbean, and immigrants. We seek to build on the history of radical and militant organizing, often led by Black women and femmes, in response to decades of forceful displacement.
Our principles
- Democratic decision-making: We deliberate, strategize, and vote collectively on the direction of our union, with all members equally empowered to propose ideas and shape campaigns.
- Organizing collectively: We are members of TUF because we believe that the issues we face cannot be solved by fighting alone. Lasting victories are won through collective struggle and joyful resistance. We deserve to flourish in our homes and community with each other.
- Building tenant associations: We share guidance, support, and organizing skills as we work to grow strong TAs in buildings across Flatbush, escalate our fights, and hold landlords accountable.
- Shared struggle: We build collaboration and solidarity between all tenants–across racial, generational, cultural, and linguistic lines. We are all a part of the same struggle, and we all bring valuable knowledge and experiences that strengthen our movement.
- By tenants, for tenants: We are an organization of tenants controlled by tenants, fighting for tenants. We define tenants as anyone who does not control their housing or anyone else’s; this includes people who are not renters and our unhoused neighbors. We do not collaborate with landlords, eviction marshals, police, real estate agents, and all others who work against the interest of tenants.
We are organizing to build tenant power boroughwide and ultimately citywide, to fight for a future with tenant-controlled and decommodified housing for all New Yorkers.
